1971-D Variety WSDO-001

Description

Denver's contribution to the WSDO-001 secondary die obverse family, the 1971-D Kennedy half dollar carries the same hub-level anomaly that affects all three mint facilities during this production period. The light CCW spread from a pivot at about 11 o'clock shows on IN GOD WE TRUST and LIBERTY, transferred to every working die sunk from the affected hub. Unlike a standard doubled die where attribution relies on die-specific markers, secondary die varieties require identification through the doubling pattern alone, since obverse and reverse die markers will differ across the many working die pairs employed during production. The Denver facility struck 302,097,424 half dollars in 1971 — nearly double Philadelphia's output — making the 1971-D the most common host for this hub-level variety in its debut year. Cross-referenced as CONECA SD-1-O-II+V and Wexler Variety ID 1971-D 50c WSDO-001, the combined Class II+V classification indicates that the working hub suffered both distortion (lateral warping of design elements) and partial rotation (pivoted displacement around a fixed point) between hub impressions during its manufacture. The resulting spread is subtle, typically requiring 10x magnification for positive identification, but its universality across multiple die pairs and mint facilities makes it a fascinating study in how a single hub defect propagated through the entire half dollar production chain. Gilroy Roberts designed the Kennedy obverse in late 1963 following the president's assassination, and by 1971 the design's detailed hair rendering and bold lettering had become the canvas upon which varieties like WSDO-001 are most readily detected.
