Description

Produced during a pivotal year in Roosevelt Dime production, the 1970-S DDR-002 preserves hub doubling on the clad proof dime from what would become the final year of large-date S-mint dime production before San Francisco's role shifted primarily to proof and collector coinage. Light spread shows as notches on UNITED, ONE, the E PLU portion of PLURIBUS, and the lower left stem — the notch-like character of the doubling indicating a close spread where the second hub impression only slightly displaced the design elements. Die markers tracked under UVC-725 and DMR-011 document three die stages: Stage A with both reverse and obverse in Early Die State (EDS), Stage B transitioning to Mid-Die State (MDS, unconfirmed), and Stage C reaching Late Die State (LDS, also unconfirmed). Cataloged by VarietyVista, this second DDR for the 1970-S reflects the careful scrutiny applied to early San Francisco proof issues, which are popular among variety collectors due to their mirror-like fields that reveal subtle hub doubling. The 1970-S proof set had a mintage of approximately 2.63 million, and the proofs were struck on the clad copper-nickel composition that had replaced silver in circulating dimes after the Coinage Act of 1965. Roosevelt Dime proof production at San Francisco was still a relatively new operation in 1970, having begun only two years earlier when proof coinage transferred from Philadelphia.
