1970-S Doubled Die Reverse WDDR-005
ErrorDescription
Exhibiting strong spread on the designer's initials FG and the right Memorial base, WDDR-005 on the 1970-S Lincoln Memorial cent proof Large Date carries an important caveat: the examined specimen was a low grade example in late die state. This has significant implications. Late die state means the reverse die had sustained extensive wear from repeated striking, potentially softening the doubling evidence visible on earlier-produced coins. Low grade indicates post-strike wear compounding the loss of surface detail. Despite these limitations, the doubling was still described as "strong" — a testament to the magnitude of the original hub displacement, which remained detectable through combined die fatigue and circulation wear. A die gouge to the left of the lower fifth column provides a die marker. For collectors, the late-die-state caveat suggests earlier die state examples could display even more dramatic doubling, making high-grade early die state specimens potential discoveries that would expand the variety's attribution profile.
