Description

Third in the Wexler doubled die reverse sequence for the 1970-S Lincoln Memorial cent, WDDR-003 shows close spread on the designer's initials FG at the lower right of the Memorial on a proof Large Date die. The "close" descriptor means the primary and secondary hub impressions are tightly spaced, requiring careful magnified examination to resolve the separation. Close spread on designer's initials is a recurring DDR theme because the initials occupy a small area of low relief where even minor hub displacement generates visible overlap, making them a sensitive indicator of reverse hubbing misalignment. A die gouge to the left of the left Memorial base supplements the doubling as an independent die marker, placing an identifiable defect in the architectural foundation area. Proof striking conditions preserved both the close spread and the base gouge with high-fidelity surface detail — polished planchets and dies producing mirror fields that maximize contrast at doubled edges.
