1970-S Doubled Die Obverse WDDO-046
ErrorDescription
Large Date counterpart to the Small Date WDDO-046, this entry shares the same close Class I clockwise spread on IN GOD WE TRUST, LIBERTY, and the date, along with identical die gouge markers southeast of the mint mark, below E of LIBERTY, and inside the upper E of ONE. The Class I clockwise rotation produces its most diagnostic evidence on design elements farthest from the rotational center — for the Lincoln obverse, this means the peripheral inscriptions LIBERTY and IN GOD WE TRUST show the clearest doubling, while the more centrally located date may show compressed evidence. On the Large Date hub, the taller 7 provides additional surface where rotational doubling can manifest: the numeral's greater vertical extent means any clockwise tilt between hub impressions translates into slightly larger absolute displacement at the top of the 7 compared to the same angular misalignment on the shorter Small Date 7. The die gouge southeast of the mint mark is particularly useful because the Large Date hub's numeral spacing differs subtly from the Small Date, and the gouge's position relative to the S mintmark provides a fixed reference point independent of hub-type variations. For collectors cross-referencing between the two versions of WDDO-046, comparing gouge positions against their respective date configurations offers a practical exercise in understanding how identical die characteristics interact differently with each hub type.
