1970 (S) Lincoln Memorial Cent - Large Date - Doubled Die Obverse WDDO-024

Description

Carrying the twenty-fourth position in Wexler's doubled die obverse catalog for the 1970-S Lincoln Memorial cent, WDDO-024 appears here in the Large Date classification. No cross-references to CONECA, Crawford, or Coppercoins have been published, leaving this variety documented exclusively through Wexler's attribution files. Each numbered WDDO represents a physically different working die carrying its own unique hub doubling characteristics and surface markers, the cumulative result of San Francisco's die production process during 1970 when multiple working dies received misaligned hub impressions during manufacture. The Large Date variety, with its tall 7 and angular 9, was the more commonly produced of the two 1970-S date configurations, and its higher representation in surviving populations means that cherry-pickers searching through 1970-S Large Date cents have a meaningful statistical advantage in encountering one of the many cataloged varieties. WDDO-024 adds to this opportunity, though its identification requires careful comparison against Wexler's reference photographs to distinguish it from the adjacent varieties in the catalog. Collectors should approach 1970-S Large Date cents with the expectation that doubled die varieties exist in meaningful numbers, making systematic magnified examination a worthwhile investment of time.
