1970 (S) Lincoln Memorial Cent - Large Date - Doubled Die Obverse WDDO-009

Description

1970-S WDDO-009 is a doubled die obverse on the 1970-S Lincoln Memorial cent, cataloged by the Wexler team. The doubling sits under the 7's horizontal bar and below the 0. Obverse, Stage A: a long, almost vertical scratch lies north of the T in LIBERTY, above its left side. Stage B: many SW to NE scratches mark the fields on both sides of the bust. Stage C: heavy abrasion has taken away the earlier scratches; a gouge sits right of the base of the 7, and light SW to NE scratches lie right of the beard. On the reverse, Stage A is an early die state (EDS) with no markers noted. Stage B: a gouge to the right of the 4th column's top and another over the E in CENT, toward its left side; nearly vertical scratches through and right of the S in PLURIBUS; a NNW to SSE scratch crossing ONE's E at its top right; and other scratches across the reverse. Stage C: heavy abrasion has removed most earlier scratches, but the scratch at the E in ONE remains. The gouge over the E in CENT is still there, while the one by the 4th column has been abraded away. John A. Wexler submitted the variety. Its Coppercoins number is 1970S-1DO-008. Wexler includes it in its "Best Of" varieties.
