1970-S Doubled Die Obverse DDO-023
Error
Description
Identified as DDO-023 on the 1970-S Lincoln Memorial cent, this doubled die obverse exhibits a strong spread with light hubbing, manifesting as an extra bar below the L of LIBERTY and above the 7 in the date — two clearly defined diagnostic targets that span the obverse from left to right. Die markers UVC-3353 and DMR-038 anchor this variety, which uses the Large Date obverse die (ODV-025) and is a Regular Strike from the San Francisco Mint. The "strong spread with light hubbing" designation reveals an unusual combination: the secondary hub impression displaced a considerable distance from the primary (strong spread), but the hubbing force was insufficient to produce a fully formed duplicate impression (light hubbing). The result is partial extra bars — raised elements of metal where the leading edges of the secondary impression took shape — rather than complete doubled letters or numerals. The extra bar below the L of LIBERTY and above the 7 in the date provide a two-point attribution framework: finding both features on the same coin confirms the die identity with high confidence. Strong spread makes these bars relatively easy to locate under standard magnification, while the light hubbing means they appear as thin lines rather than fully realized design duplicates. As a Regular Strike, DDO-023 circulated from the San Francisco Mint, offering cherry-pickers the opportunity to locate this variety through roll searching and accumulation sorting.
