1970 Variety WMHR-002

Description

WMHR-002 on the 1970-P Washington Quarter documents the SD-2 Working Master Hub Reverse variety on a Philadelphia Mint business strike, the counterpart to WMHR-001 at the same date and mint. The CONECA SD-2 designation identifies this master hub by its defining characteristic: the leaf to the left of the arrowheads is rounded at its tip, as opposed to the pointed leaf of the SD-1 hub. Both SD-1 and SD-2 were in simultaneous use during some or all of the 1968-1974 production window, meaning coins from both hubs could be produced in the same year at the same mint. The rounded-leaf feature is the most direct means of distinguishing WMHR-002 coins from WMHR-001 coins struck from the same year and facility. Working dies with the exact same doubling are known to exist for the years 1968 through 1970 from all three Mints including proof coins. Differences in the appearance of the doubling will result from master hub wear, master die wear, working hub wear, working die wear, as well as coin wear. A second similar doubled master hub exists for this time period with the main difference being the leave directly to the left of the arrowheads. On the other doubled master hub that leave is pointed at the top.
