Description

On the 1970-P Washington Quarter, WMHR-001 records the third year of Philadelphia Mint business strikes from the SD-1 Working Master Hub Reverse die, catalogued as CONECA SD-1-R-II-C+VI. The continuity of this hub across multiple years — 1968 through 1974 — reflects the mint practice of using master hubs over extended production periods, during which time thousands of working dies could be made from a single hub. Each of those dies inherited the same doubling, which is why CONECA describes this category as a master hub variety rather than a conventional doubled die. The SD-1 pointed leaf to the left of the arrowheads remains the definitive diagnostic for distinguishing these coins from the SD-2 rounded-leaf hub. Working dies with the exact same doubling are known to exist for the years 1968 through 1974 from all three Mints including proof coins. Differences in the appearance of the doubling will result from master hub wear, master die wear, working hub wear, working die wear, as well as coin wear. A second similar doubled master hub exists for this time period with the main difference being the leave directly to the left of the arrowheads. On the second doubled master hub that leave is rounded at the top.
