1970-D Doubled Die Reverse WDDR-004

Description

This 1970 Denver Mint Washington Quarter WDDR-004 is a hub variety — specifically a Type F reverse over Type G reverse, cataloged as WMHR-001 over WMHR-002. The doubling results not from a misaligned hubbing of the same hub, but from the use of two different hub types on the same die, making this a scarcer and more historically significant variety than standard doubled dies. The spread is moderate, directed toward center, and visible on QUARTER DOLLAR, the olive branch and arrows, and slightly on UNITED and AMERICA. Obverse die markers include two die gouges to the left of the top of the R in LIBERTY and a small die gouge above the D mint mark. On the reverse, die gouges appear to the right of the last A in AMERICA and to the right of the E in AMERICA. Cross-referenced as Wexler 1970-D 25-cent WDDR-004. Struck in clad composition following the 1965 transition from silver, the 1970-D quarter is part of the early clad era of John Flanagan's Washington design.
