Description

Bearing triple catalog recognition as CONECA 1-O-V, Cherrypickers' Guide FS-25-1970D-101, and Wexler WDDO-001, this 1970-D Washington clad quarter stands as one of the strongest doubled die obverses in the post-1964 quarter series. The doubling is classified as a very strong counterclockwise spread from a pivot point at approximately 10 o'clock on the die face, affecting IN GOD WE TRUST, the date, the designer's initials JF, the lower portion of Washington's queue, and the letters ERTY in LIBERTY. The Class V pivoted mechanism means the spread magnitude increases with distance from the 10 o'clock pivot, making features in the lower right quadrant of the obverse the most dramatically displaced. A diagonal die gouge in the field well north of the N in IN serves as the primary obverse die marker, while the reverse exhibits a die crack running down the eagle's right wing. The Cherrypickers' Guide listing as FS-25-1970D-101 places this firmly in the mainstream variety collecting reference literature, and its inclusion ensures active cherrypicking interest at shows and in dealer inventory. The 1970-D quarter had a mintage of 417.341 million pieces in the copper-nickel clad composition introduced in 1965.
