1970 (D) Lincoln Memorial Cent - Doubled Die Obverse WDDO-024

Description

1970-D WDDO-024 is a doubled die obverse on the 1970-D Lincoln Memorial cent, cataloged by the Wexler team. Doubling shows above the 7's horizontal bar in the date. Wexler notes the obverse die was heavily abraded to remove clash marks. Clash marks from two of the Memorial bays are still visible to the left of the lower head and the neck's back. Parallel west-to-east scratches cross the 197, and many more scratches, mostly SW to NE, appear across the obverse. The reverse die is the same one seen on WDDO-018A, and it too was heavily abraded to remove clash marks, with remnants still in the 4th bay. One scratch starts at the upper right of the 1st T of STATES and passes through the dot separating the E and P in E PLURIBUS UNUM. Another links the A in STATES, at its lower right, with the P in PLURIBUS at its upper right, and a third goes SW from the I of UNITED down to the Memorial. Many other scratches, mostly NW to SE, cover the reverse. Brian Ribar submitted the variety. Its Coppercoins number is 1970D-1DO-006.
