The Wexler Team attributed this variety under the designation 1969-S 50¢ Pr WDDR-001, and no additional cross-references have been established in CONECA or other attribution systems. No die markers were documented for either obverse or reverse, which, while limiting the secondary diagnostics available for authentication, is not uncommon for early entries in the Wexler files where the initial focus was on documenting the doubling pattern itself. San Francisco struck 2,934,631 proof sets in 1969, each containing the cent through half dollar, and the Kennedy half dollar's position as the set's highest-denomination coin made it the most closely examined by collectors, increasing the likelihood that doubled die varieties would be detected. The 1969-S proof Kennedy half dollar sits in the middle of the 1965-1970 silver-clad proof era, struck in the 40% silver composition that gave these coins precious metal value beyond their fifty-cent face value.
