Description

Forty-sixth in the Wexler catalog of doubled die reverses for the 1969-S Proof Jefferson Nickel, WDDR-046 was attributed by Brian Ribar and exhibits Class II (Distorted Hub) doubling with a close spread on E PLURIBUS UNUM and OF AMERICA. The extraordinary depth of the 1969-S proof DDR census — reaching well beyond forty varieties — reflects San Francisco's proof die production scale during the late 1960s and the dedicated research that followed. Unlike WDDR-026, which affects both E PLURIBUS UNUM and the full UNITED STATES OF AMERICA inscription, WDDR-046 concentrates its doubling on a narrower range of elements, helping collectors distinguish between the two. Three diagnostic die markers confirm attribution: a die gouge between IB of PLURIBUS, a die scratch inside the left arch of Monticello, and another die scratch between NT of CENT. This constellation, unique to this working die, provides reliable identification independent of the doubling itself. Proof striking renders the close Class II spread with crisp definition from polished dies and multiple impressions, rewarding examination under at least 5x magnification.
