1969-S Doubled Die Reverse WDDR-040
ErrorDescription
Attributed by Brian Ribar on this proof Jefferson Nickel, the 1969-S WDDR-040 presents a close Class II Distorted Hub Doubling spread on E PLURIBUS UNUM. The reverse die carries a distinctive constellation of die markers: a die gouge to the upper right of the B of PLURIBUS, another gouge inside the upper portion of the E of E PLURIBUS UNUM, a gouge above the first T of STATES, a die scratch inside the left arch of the Monticello building, and a gouge above the steps at the right edge of the building. No significant obverse markers have been noted. Proof coins from the San Francisco Mint during this era were struck with specially prepared dies on polished planchets, and the mirrored fields can make even close-spread doubling easier to detect under proper lighting. The abundance of reverse die gouges provides multiple confirmation points for attribution, ensuring collectors can verify this variety with confidence beyond the doubling alone.
