Description

Identified by Brian Ribar on a proof striking, this Class II doubled die reverse on the 1969-S Proof Jefferson Nickel presents distorted hub doubling with a close spread visible on E PLURIBUS UNUM and STATES OF AMERICA. A close Class II spread indicates that the hubbing distortion produced a tight displacement — subtle enough to require careful magnification but consistent enough across multiple design elements to confirm genuine hub doubling rather than strike doubling or die deterioration. As a proof issue, this coin was struck at San Francisco on specially prepared polished planchets using polished dies, producing mirror-like fields that make even minor doubling more conspicuous against the reflective surface. Reverse die markers include die scratches on the rim below STATES and additional die scratches on the rim above PLUR of PLURIBUS, while no significant obverse markers have been noted. San Francisco served as the exclusive proof production facility during this era, striking proof sets for collectors while also producing circulation coinage that had resumed in 1968.
