Description

Discovered by William Hostutler and attributed in the Wexler Doubled Die Files under 1969-S WDDR-033 Proof, this San Francisco Mint Proof Jefferson Nickel DDR is a Class II distorted hub doubled die reverse with a close spread on E PLURIBUS UNUM and UNITED STATES OF AMERICA that increases from left to right. The directional amplification — growing more pronounced toward the right of the top arc — is consistent with a tilted hub displacement placing the greatest separation at the far end of the inscription. The 1969-S proof year is notable in numismatic history: 1969-S Lincoln Cent proof production generated the celebrated 1969-S Doubled Die Obverse cent, one of the most famous modern varieties in American coinage. While WDDR-033 operates in a different denomination, the 1969-S proof issue shares that production context. Die markers are concentrated in the lower central reverse: die gouges appear below the crossbar of the F in designer's initials FS, at the upper right of the L, and below the second O of MONTICELLO — three markers in an area efficiently examined with a loupe.
