Description

Attributed by Brian A. Ribar, this proof 1969-S Jefferson Nickel WDDR-025 exhibits Class II distorted hub doubling with a very close spread on E PLURIBUS UNUM and a stronger spread on UNITED STATES OF AMERICA that increases from left to right. The progressive strengthening of the spread across the legend reveals the angular geometry of the hub distortion — areas farther from the tilt axis display greater displacement between hub impressions. The 1969-S proof was struck at the San Francisco Mint, which had resumed proof production in 1968 after the three-year SMS interlude. As a proof coin, it was produced using polished dies on specially prepared planchets, resulting in mirror-like fields that can make even subtle doubling more visible under magnification. Cross-referenced under Wexler Variety ID 1969-S WDDR-025 Proof, this variety sits deep in a substantial catalog of twenty-five documented DDRs for the date, reflecting the considerable attention proof Jefferson Nickels receive from variety specialists. The Class II mechanism and left-to-right gradient serve as the primary identification characteristics.
