1969-S Doubled Die Reverse WDDR-011

Description

A proof doubled die reverse on the 1969 San Francisco Mint Jefferson Nickel, WDDR-011 exhibits Class II distorted hub doubling with a spread directed toward the center of the die. The doubling is most prominent on E PLURIBUS UNUM, UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, and the right side of the Monticello building, with slight spread also visible on FIVE CENTS and the LO of MONTICELLO. Discovered and submitted by Jim Brown, the variety carries multiple diagnostic die markers: on the obverse, a die gouge north of the center horizontal bar of the E in WE and another die gouge left of the first T of TRUST; on the reverse, a short diagonal die gouge to the right of the lower half of the D in UNITED and a short gouge from the bottom left of the center curve of the second S in STATES. Cross-referenced as Wexler 1969-S WDDR-011 Proof. As a proof issue, this coin was struck on specially prepared polished planchets using polished dies at the San Francisco Mint, producing mirror-like fields and frosted design elements. The combination of proof manufacture and Class II hub doubling makes this a notable variety for Jefferson Nickel specialists. Struck in 75% copper and 25% nickel.
