Coin Details
Description
Swoger catalog number D1969-5b. This silver medal was struck at the United States Mint in Philadelphia as a memorial to Sir Winston Leonard Spencer Churchill, the British Prime Minister who led the United Kingdom through World War II. Churchill, who died on January 24, 1965, was awarded honorary United States citizenship by an Act of Congress in 1963 — only the second person to receive this distinction. His wartime leadership, masterful oratory, and close alliance with President Franklin Roosevelt were instrumental in the Allied victory. Churchill's speeches — including "We shall fight on the beaches" and "Their finest hour" — became among the most celebrated addresses of the 20th century. He was also a prolific author, winning the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1953. The Swoger catalog (D-series), compiled by Tom Swoger, documents modern U.S. Mint commemorative medals from 1956 onward.
