Coin Details
Description
Swoger catalog number D1973-4c. This bronze medal was struck at the United States Mint in Philadelphia to commemorate the bicentennial of Samuel Adams and Patrick Henry, two of the most influential voices of the American Revolution. Samuel Adams of Massachusetts organized the Sons of Liberty, helped plan the Boston Tea Party, and signed the Declaration of Independence. Patrick Henry of Virginia delivered the immortal speech containing the words "Give me liberty, or give me death!" on March 23, 1775, galvanizing support for American independence. Both men served as governors of their respective states after the Revolution. The joint bicentennial honors their parallel roles in igniting the revolutionary spirit during 1773-1774. The Swoger catalog (D-series), compiled by Tom Swoger, documents modern U.S. Mint commemorative medals from 1956 onward.
