Description
Swoger catalog number D1956-1a. This bronze medal was struck at the United States Mint in Philadelphia to commemorate the 120th anniversary of Texas independence from Mexico. Texas declared independence on March 2, 1836, when delegates at Washington-on-the-Brazos signed the Texas Declaration of Independence, establishing the Republic of Texas. The republic existed as a sovereign nation for nearly a decade before annexation by the United States in 1845. The Swoger catalog, compiled by Tom Swoger (also known as the Duffield/Swoger catalog), systematically documents modern U.S. Mint commemorative medals produced from 1956 onward, assigning each a D-prefix catalog number based on year and sequence. This 1956 Texas Independence medal is among the earliest entries in the catalog, marking the beginning of the Mint's postwar commemorative medal program. The "AE" designation indicates a bronze composition, the standard base-metal format used for most U.S. Mint medal issues of this era.
Rarity Notes
Early Swoger catalog entry from 1956. Production figures for this era of U.S. Mint medals were generally modest compared to later issues. Exact mintage not separately reported by the Mint.
