Strike Type
Coin Details
Description
Swoger catalog number D1972-4b. This yellow bronze medal was struck at the United States Mint in Philadelphia to commemorate George Washington as part of the American Revolution Bicentennial program. Washington, the indispensable figure of the American founding, commanded the Continental Army through eight years of war, presided over the Constitutional Convention in 1787, and served two terms as President, establishing precedents that shaped the office for centuries. His voluntary relinquishment of power was considered so remarkable that King George III reportedly called Washington "the greatest character of the age." The yellow bronze alloy provides a warm golden tone befitting the Father of His Country. The Swoger catalog (D-series), compiled by Tom Swoger, documents modern U.S. Mint commemorative medals from 1956 onward. This is the standard yellow bronze version in the D1972-4 Washington series.
Rarity Notes
Yellow bronze Washington bicentennial medal. Part of the broader American Revolution Bicentennial program. Exact mintage not separately reported.
