Description
Swoger catalog number D1976-4c. This bronze medal was struck at the United States Mint in Philadelphia to commemorate the bicentennial of Thomas Jefferson's contributions to American independence. Jefferson, the principal author of the Declaration of Independence adopted on July 4, 1776, was one of the most influential figures of the American founding. He served as governor of Virginia, Minister to France, Secretary of State under Washington, Vice President under Adams, and the third President of the United States from 1801 to 1809. His vision of an agrarian republic, individual liberty, and westward expansion shaped American policy for generations. The Swoger catalog (D-series), compiled by Tom Swoger, documents modern U.S. Mint commemorative medals from 1956 onward. This bronze medal is the base-metal issue in the D1976-4 Jefferson bicentennial series.
