Description
Swoger catalog number D1969-1c. This 76mm bronze medal was struck at the United States Mint in Philadelphia to commemorate the 200th anniversary of San Diego's founding in 1769. San Diego's bicentennial celebrations in 1969 marked two centuries since Padre Junipero Serra established Mission San Diego de Alcala and Captain Gaspar de Portola founded the military presidio overlooking San Diego Bay. These twin establishments β religious and military β represented the standard Spanish colonial pattern of settlement in Alta California. By its bicentennial, San Diego was California's second-largest city and a major center for the U.S. Pacific Fleet. The Swoger catalog (D-series), compiled by Tom Swoger, documents modern U.S. Mint commemorative medals from 1956 onward. This 76mm bronze medal is the large-format base-metal issue in the D1969-1 series.
