1968-S Doubled Die Reverse WDDR-002

Description

Produced in the first year of San Francisco proof coinage, WDDR-002 on the 1968-S Proof Roosevelt Dime features Class I counter-clockwise spread on USA, ONE DIME, E PLU of E PLURIBUS UNUM, and the flames at the top of the torch. The Type 2 reverse — distinguished by specific design details in the torch and olive branch — provides the canvas for this multi-element doubling. CONECA lists this variety as 4-R-I. Notably, this variety once carried the Cherrypickers designation FS-10-1968S-802 but was removed in the 6th Edition — a delisting that itself constitutes a point of attribution history, as it means earlier reference guides include the variety while current editions do not. The counter-clockwise rotational spread creates progressively wider displacement moving away from the hub's rotation axis, with the torch flames near the top of the design showing some of the clearest expression. The 1968-S proof represents the inaugural San Francisco proof issue after the three-year hiatus of 1965-1967 when no proof coins were produced.
