Description

Swoger catalog number D1968-1b. This silver medal was struck at the United States Mint in Philadelphia to commemorate HemisFair '68, the 1968 World's Fair held in San Antonio, Texas, from April 6 to October 6, 1968. Themed "The Confluence of Civilizations in the Americas," HemisFair '68 was the first officially sanctioned World's Fair held in the southwestern United States. The exposition celebrated San Antonio's 250th anniversary and featured participants from over 30 nations. Its most enduring legacy is the Tower of the Americas, a 750-foot observation tower that remains the tallest structure in San Antonio. The fair also produced the San Antonio Convention Center and the Institute of Texan Cultures. The Swoger catalog (D-series), compiled by Tom Swoger, documents modern U.S. Mint commemorative medals from 1956 onward.
