Description
Swoger catalog number D1968-2a. This 76mm bronze medal was struck at the United States Mint in Philadelphia for Walt Disney Productions. Walt Disney had passed away on December 15, 1966, and by 1968 the company he founded was continuing his vision with plans for Walt Disney World in Florida, which would open in 1971. Disney revolutionized American entertainment through animated films beginning with Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs in 1937, theme parks starting with Disneyland in 1955, and television programs that brought his characters into millions of homes. The 76mm large format provides generous space for artistic detail honoring the Disney legacy. The Swoger catalog (D-series), compiled by Tom Swoger, documents modern U.S. Mint commemorative medals from 1956 onward. U.S. Mint-struck medals for private organizations like Disney Productions were produced under contract arrangements.
