Description

Swoger catalog number D1968-1c. This bronze medal was struck at the United States Mint in Philadelphia to commemorate HemisFair '68, the World's Fair held in San Antonio, Texas, from April 6 to October 6, 1968. The fair drew over 6.3 million visitors to its 92-acre site in downtown San Antonio, showcasing the cultural convergence of North and South American civilizations. HemisFair was designated a "Special Category" World Exposition by the Bureau International des Expositions. The fairgrounds transformed a deteriorating neighborhood into a modern civic center, incorporating the restored historic homes and missions of the area. The Swoger catalog (D-series), compiled by Tom Swoger, documents modern U.S. Mint commemorative medals from 1956 onward. This bronze medal is the standard base-metal option in the D1968-1 HemisFair series.
