1967 Washington Quarter - Doubled Die Obverse WDDO-001

Description

1967 WDDO-001 is a doubled die obverse on the 1967 Washington quarter, cataloged by the Wexler team. The doubling is a strong spread toward the center on LIBERTY, where the spread also turns slightly counterclockwise (CCW) around a pivot near 7:00 and grows stronger from left to right; a weaker spread shows on the lower queue, the date and the designer's initials. Wexler notes no markers on obverse Stage A. Obverse Stage B shows an east-west crack across the upper forehead that reaches into the hair, a light crack across the bust's base, and a small round gouge (dot) just SW of the nose tip. The Stage A reverse is not a doubled die reverse (DDR). On Stage B the reverse is itself a doubled die, filed by Wexler as 1967 WDDR-001: a clockwise (CW) spread, pivoting near 9:00, on STATES OF AMERICA, E PLURIBUS UNUM, the lower leaves and branches, and QUARTER DOLLAR. On STATES OF AMERICA only the lower parts of the letters are doubled, which Wexler takes to mean the pivot came from an early hubbing. Its markers are a crack on the eagle's left wing under the MER of AMERICA, and a gouge running south to the wing from the D of UNITED at its lower right. Mark L. Williams submitted the variety. CONECA lists it as 1-O-II.
