Description
Swoger catalog number D1967-1b. This standard-size silver medal was struck at the United States Mint in Philadelphia to commemorate the 25th anniversary of the Seabees (Naval Construction Battalions). Created in March 1942 by Rear Admiral Ben Moreell, the Seabees served as military construction forces capable of building and fighting simultaneously. During World War II alone, over 325,000 men served in Seabee battalions across the Pacific and European theaters, constructing airfields, pontoon causeways, fuel storage facilities, and hospitals, often while under fire. The Seabees' fighting bee mascot was designed by Frank Iafrate at the Naval Air Station in Quonset Point, Rhode Island. The Swoger catalog (D-series), compiled by Tom Swoger, documents modern U.S. Mint commemorative medals from 1956 onward. This smaller silver version complements the 76mm matte silver issue in the D1967-1 series.
Rarity Notes
Standard-size silver Seabees anniversary medal. Silver composition ensures lower production numbers than bronze. Exact mintage not separately reported.
