Description
Swoger catalog number D1967-1a. This 76mm matte silver medal was struck at the United States Mint in Philadelphia to commemorate the 25th anniversary of the United States Naval Construction Battalions, universally known as the Seabees. Established on March 5, 1942, during World War II by Rear Admiral Ben Moreell, the Seabees were created to provide military construction support in combat zones after civilian construction workers could no longer be used under the laws of war. Their motto "Construimus, Batuimus" (We Build, We Fight) reflected their dual role as both builders and combat troops. By their 25th anniversary, Seabees had served in every major conflict from World War II through Vietnam, building airstrips, bridges, roads, and entire bases under enemy fire. The Swoger catalog (D-series), compiled by Tom Swoger, documents modern U.S. Mint commemorative medals from 1956 onward.
Rarity Notes
Large-format 76mm matte silver medal. The military subject and silver composition make this a desirable issue. Exact mintage not separately reported.
