1967 Doubled Die Reverse WDDR-014

Description

Struck as a Special Mint Set coin during the 1965-67 period when SMS issues replaced traditional proof sets, this 1967 Jefferson Nickel doubled die reverse shows Class II Distorted Hub Doubling on E PLURIBUS UNUM and UNITED STATES OF AMERICA. Attributed by Brian A. Ribar and cross-referenced as Wexler Variety ID: 1967 WDDR-014 SMS, this is a dual variety — the obverse die is also listed as 1967 WDDO-010 SMS, making specimens doubly collectible. Reverse die markers include a die gouge in the field below UR of PLURIBUS, a series of die gouges in the field above the C of AMERICA, and a die gouge to the lower left of the right small window on Monticello. Special Mint Set coins occupy a middle ground between business strikes and proofs, struck with greater care and sometimes on polished planchets but without the full mirror-finish proof treatment. The 1965-67 SMS era resulted from the great coin shortage, when the Treasury eliminated mintmarks and proof sets to discourage hoarding. SMS Jefferson Nickel varieties from this transitional period are collected as a distinct subset within the series.
