Description
The 1967 SMS Jefferson Nickel holds a unique place in the series — struck during the three-year period (1965–1967) when the U.S. Mint eliminated mint marks and replaced proof sets with Special Mint Sets. WDDO-005 exhibits Class II distorted hub doubling, visible on IN GOD WE TRUST and designer Felix Schlag's initials FS. A large die dot to the right of Jefferson's eye on the obverse serves as the primary die marker, while a die scratch on the rim above NU of UNUM confirms the reverse die. Class II doubling results from a tilted or twisted hub during the hubbing process, producing a rotational displacement pattern rather than the lateral shift seen in Class I varieties. SMS strikes typically display a finish between business strike and proof, giving this variety a distinctive appearance that can enhance the visibility of the doubled features under proper lighting.
