1967 Doubled Die Reverse WDDR-003
Error
Description
Struck during the Special Mint Set era of 1965 to 1967 — when the U.S. Mint produced neither proof coins nor standard business strikes, issuing only SMS coins — this 1967 Jefferson Nickel WDDR-003 exhibits Class II distorted hub doubling with a nice spread toward the center on E PLURIBUS UNUM, FIVE CENTS, UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, and the right side of the Monticello building. Notably, tripling is evident on UNUM and UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, indicating at least three hub impressions contributed to the die's final state rather than the typical two. The presence of tripling adds complexity and visual interest that elevates this variety above standard doubled die listings. Obverse die markers include two die gouges from the rim at approximately the 12:30 position. The reverse shows light horizontal die scratches around the dome of Monticello, especially on the right side. SMS coins occupy a unique niche in Jefferson Nickel collecting as transitional-era pieces with a distinctive satin-like finish between business strike and proof quality, making doubled die varieties from these three years particularly scarce and sought after.
