Cataloged by MadDieClashes as CCL(TI)-5c-1966-01, this 1966-P Jefferson Nickel represents a Type I counter clash — a distinctive error type produced when a die undergoes two separate clash events that are slightly offset from each other in position or rotation. The two overlapping clash marks interfere with each other rather than simply reinforcing a single impression, creating the counter clash effect. On this example, the double offset clash marks are visible to the right of the bow in Jefferson's queue — the gathered section of hair at the back of the head. The practical consequence of the two offset clashes is visible on the Monticello reverse: an extra roof line appears above the right side of Monticello, a transferred impression that would not be present from a single clean clash event. Type I counter clashes differ from Type II in that the obverse transfers appear on the reverse and vice versa through direct die-to-die contact without a planchet intervening. The 1966 Jefferson Nickel is part of the special mintmark-free series struck between 1965 and 1967 when the Mint suspended mintmark use in response to the coin shortage of the mid-1960s.
