1966 Doubled Die Reverse WDDR-001
ErrorDescription
The sole cataloged Wexler doubled die reverse for the 1966 Lincoln cent, WDDR-001 is a strong Class I variety — the most dramatic and collectible doubling class — displaying a clockwise spread on USA of STATES OF AMERICA, EPU of E PLURIBUS UNUM, ONE CENT, the designer's initials FG, and the left and right Memorial bases. Class I doubled dies are created by rotated hub doubling, where the hub rotates around its center between successive impressions during die manufacture, producing a spread that radiates outward from the center of rotation. The strong designation indicates that the separation between primary and secondary hub images is significant enough to be readily visible under moderate magnification, making this variety more easily detectable than the close or very close spreads found on many of the 1966 doubled die obverse varieties. The information and photographs for this variety were provided by Brian Allen, a respected contributor to the Wexler Doubled Die Files whose research has expanded the documented population of Lincoln cent varieties. The extensive die scratches documented on both surfaces provide multiple attribution markers beyond the doubled die pattern itself. Cross-referenced as CONECA 1-R-I — the number-one reverse variety designation — and Wexler Variety ID: 1966 1¢ WDDR-001, attributed by the Wexler Team. The 1966 Lincoln cent was struck at the Philadelphia Mint without mint marks under the Coinage Act of 1965, with a business strike mintage of 2,188,147,783. Struck on a 3.11-gram, 19mm planchet of 95% copper and 5% zinc.
