1966 Doubled Die Reverse DDR-007
Error
Description
Produced as a Special Mint Set (SMS) coin during the 1965-1967 era when the U.S. Mint suspended both proof and traditional uncirculated set production, this 1966 Kennedy Half Dollar DDR-007 displays medium spread on the stars beneath UNITED STATES OF AMERICA along with light notches on the inscription letters, and light spread on the stars positioned between the heraldic eagle's rays. SMS coins occupy a unique niche — struck with greater care than business strikes but not to full proof standards, they exhibit satin-like or sometimes slightly mirrored surfaces. Three die stages are documented under catalog codes UVC-105 and DMR-033. Stage A at early die state is identified by a die gouge on the rim above the ES of STATES, with the obverse also in early die state. Stage B places both sides in mid-die state. Stage C at late die state remains unconfirmed. As a 40% silver-clad issue (the Kennedy Half transitioned from 90% silver to 40% silver-clad in 1965), this coin represents the SMS-only production window. Cataloged by VarietyVista, DDR-007 rewards examination of the star field beneath the upper inscription and between the eagle's rays.
