1966 Doubled Die Obverse DDO-030
Error
Description
Cataloged by VarietyVista with UVC-395 and DMR-037 designations, this thirtieth doubled die obverse for the 1966 Kennedy Half Dollar Silver Clad issue exhibits light spread on the chin, neck, ear, designer's initials (the "GR" of Gilroy Roberts), and the hair at the back of the head, combined with a light counterclockwise spread on IBERTY of LIBERTY. Three die states have been documented: Stage A in early die state (EDS) for both obverse and reverse, Stage B showing mid-die-state (MDS) characteristics, and Stage C in late die state (LDS) though unconfirmed. The 1966 Kennedy Half Dollar holds special significance as part of the transitional silver clad composition period — 40% silver bonded to a copper core — that bridged the gap between the 90% silver 1964 issue and the eventual shift to copper-nickel clad in 1971. Thirty doubled die obverses documented for a single date demonstrates the extraordinary depth of Kennedy Half Dollar die variety research. The light counterclockwise spread on LIBERTY suggests a Class V pivoted hub doubling, while the spread on facial features indicates a pivot point that allowed the portrait details to shift between hub impressions. Gilroy Roberts designed the Kennedy obverse portrait based on the Presidential Medal, and the fine detail of the hair waves, ear contours, and chin line make these areas particularly sensitive to revealing even subtle hub doubling. Collectors assembling a die state progression set for DDO-030 can track the paired dies from their earliest strikes through terminal deterioration.
