1966 Doubled Die Obverse WDDO-004
Error
Description
Fourth in the Wexler sequence of 1966 Kennedy Half Dollar doubled die obverses and cataloged as Wexler Variety ID 1966 50c WDDO-004, this variety was produced during the silver-clad era when Kennedy Half Dollars transitioned from 90% silver to the 40% silver-clad composition of 80% silver outer layers bonded to a 20.9% silver core. The WDDO-004 designation places this die within a substantial family of at least nine documented doubled die obverses for the 1966 date alone — a density of varieties that reflects the enormous number of working dies required to produce the half dollar denomination during a period when the public aggressively hoarded these coins for their silver content, driving production volumes well above typical levels. Gilroy Roberts' obverse portrait of John F. Kennedy, adopted just months after the president's assassination in 1963, features deeply sculpted hair detail and a bold profile that provides numerous diagnostic zones where hub misalignment can produce detectable doubling — from the fine parallel hair waves to the ear, jawline, LIBERTY inscription, date, and the motto IN GOD WE TRUST. The 1966 date is notable for the absence of a mintmark, as the United States Mint eliminated mintmarks from all denominations produced in 1965, 1966, and 1967 in an effort to reduce coin speculation during the silver-to-clad transition. At 11.5 grams in the 40% silver-clad composition, these half dollars were widely recognized as containing meaningful silver value, which contributed to their low survival rate in circulated grades and makes well-preserved variety specimens comparatively scarce.
