Description

Produced as a Special Mint Set issue during the 1965-1967 period when the Mint suspended proof and standard mint set production, this 1966 Kennedy Half Dollar DDO-019 shows strong spread on the profile, eye, earlobe, designer's initials, and IN GOD WE TRUST, with strong clockwise rotation on the last 6 of the date and medium counter-clockwise rotation on the TY of LIBERTY. Cross-referenced as FS-104 and cataloged by VarietyVista under UVC-093, DMR-021, this variety combines two distinct rotational movements — CW and CCW — suggesting a complex hubbing event. Die stage documentation shows Stage A with a short die gouge south from the upper L of LIBERTY at early die state and the reverse at early die state, Stage B at mid-die state (unconfirmed), and Stage C at late die state (unconfirmed). The 1966 SMS Kennedy Half Dollar was struck in 40% silver composition, the reduced silver content adopted after the Coinage Act of 1965. With strong spread visible on multiple obverse design elements and the FS-104 designation, this ranks among the more collectible SMS Kennedy doubled dies from the transitional mid-1960s era.
