Description

Produced as a Special Mint Set (SMS) issue when the Mint suspended proof production, this 1966 Kennedy Half Dollar doubled die obverse is cross-referenced as FS-103. Attributed by VarietyVista (UVC-087, DMR-015), the variety shows strong spread on the profile, eye, ear, sideburn hair, designer's initials, and IN GOD WE TRUST, with triple spread on the last T of TRUST. Medium CW rotation appears on IB of LIBERTY and medium CCW rotation on the last 6 of the date. Stage A: die scratch from lower lip to chin (EDS), two light die gouges next to rim SW of I in IN, die scratches N-S above arrows in eagle's left talon. Stage B: die clash in field in front of forehead (EMDS). Stage C: clash abraded away (MDS). Stage D: LDS unconfirmed. SMS coins were struck 1965-67 with a distinctive satin-like finish, and doubled dies on these transitional issues are particularly desirable.
