1966 Doubled Die Obverse DDO-005
Error
Description
Cross-referenced as FS-101, this 1966 Kennedy Half Dollar is cataloged as UVC-079, DMR-007 and exhibits strong spread on IN GOD WE TRUST, the designer's initials, the entire profile of Kennedy, the eye, and the lower earlobe, along with clockwise rotation on the last 6 of the date. Three die stages are documented: Stage A in Early Die State (unconfirmed); Stage B in Mid Die State showing a light, thick die scratch running southwest from the upper first T of TRUST and a die scratch south from the arrowheads to the A of DOLLAR; and Stage C in Late Die State where both the obverse and reverse die scratches have weakened. Struck in 40% silver clad composition, the 1966 Kennedy Half Dollar was produced during the transitional period following the Coinage Act of 1965, when half dollars retained reduced silver content while other denominations moved to copper-nickel clad. The strong profile doubling on DDO-005 makes it one of the most dramatic doubled die obverses in the early Kennedy series. The spread across Kennedy's entire facial profile, combined with the rotational shift on the date, indicates significant hub misalignment during die preparation.
