1966 Doubled Die Obverse DDO-003
Error
Description
Medium spread on the eye, nose, chin, and designer's initials paired with light spread on IN GOD WE TRUST and the date distinguishes this 1966 Kennedy Half Dollar DDO-003. Struck during the no-mintmark era of 1965-1967 in 40% silver clad composition, this regular strike carries no mintmark regardless of its production facility — a deliberate Mint policy enacted to discourage collector hoarding that had contributed to the nationwide coin shortage. Die markers UVC-077 and DMR-005 identify the variety within the VarietyVista system. Three die stages reveal the die's full working life: Stage A at Early Die State shows a long thin die scratch running north-to-south behind Kennedy's head with the reverse also at EDS, Stage B captures Mid Die State, and Stage C at Late Die State documents die cracks developing on the front trunk of the bust and through the upper DO of DOLLAR on the reverse. The medium spread concentrating on Kennedy's facial features — eye, nose, and chin — makes this variety visually distinctive because the doubling appears on the portrait's most recognizable contours, while the light spread on the motto and date provides secondary confirmation zones.
