Description

Carrying attribution codes UVC-076 and DMR-004 and cross-referenced as FS-901, this 1966 Kennedy Half Dollar obverse doubled die shows a light spread on IN GOD WE TRUST, the date, and the Y of LIBERTY. Five die stages are documented. Stage A: early die state, unconfirmed. Stage B, middle die state: minor doubling on stars under STATES OF AMERICA. Stage C, late-middle die state: the lower F of the designer's initials has been abraded away. Stage D, late die state: the F is very faint to gone. Stage E, the very late die state: the bridge of the nose and eye begin to abrade away; designer's initials gone. The FS-901 cross-reference applies specifically to Stage E — the most collectible die state of this variety. The 1966 Kennedy Half Dollar belongs to the 40% silver transitional series (1965-1970), produced after the elimination of 90% silver half dollars. FS-901 designations carry strong marketplace recognition in the Kennedy specialty, and Stage E examples command a consistent premium.
