Description

Swoger catalog number D1965-3b. This silver medal was struck at the United States Mint in Philadelphia to commemorate Castle Clinton, the circular sandstone fort at the southern tip of Manhattan in Battery Park. Built between 1808 and 1811 as a defensive fortification named Castle Clinton (originally Southwest Battery), the structure has served remarkably varied purposes throughout its history: a military fort during the War of 1812, an entertainment venue called Castle Garden from 1824 to 1855 hosting figures like the Swedish singer Jenny Lind, America's first immigrant processing center from 1855 to 1890 (predating Ellis Island), the New York City Aquarium from 1896 to 1941, and finally a national monument designated in 1946. The Swoger catalog (D-series), compiled by Tom Swoger, documents modern U.S. Mint commemorative medals from 1956 onward. This silver medal is part of the NYC national monuments series.
