1965 Doubled Working Hub Reverse WWHR-001

Description

Unlike a standard doubled die reverse where doubling originates on a single working die, a Doubled Working Hub Reverse (WWHR) traces its origin to the working hub itself. When doubling occurs at the hub level, every working die produced from that hub inherits the doubled impression, meaning the variety can appear on coins from multiple dies. This 1965 Kennedy Half Dollar WWHR-001 is the first such variety cataloged for the date, appearing on the inaugural year of the silver-clad composition. After 1964's 90% silver Kennedy Half, the 1965-1970 issues shifted to 40% silver-clad (80% silver outer layers bonded to a 21% silver inner core) under the Coinage Act of 1965. The absence of a mintmark on 1965 coins reflects the congressional mandate removing mintmarks from all coinage during 1965-1967. Attributed by the Wexler Team, WWHR-001 represents a hub-level anomaly on one of the most significant transitional dates in Kennedy Half Dollar history.
