Description

Reported by Joe Miller, DDO-003 on the 1965 Washington quarter presents strong northward spread on the date, paired with reverse die variety RDV-004. Northward spread means the secondary hub impression was displaced vertically above the primary position, creating a shadow image above the date digits visible under magnification. The 1965 quarter holds a pivotal place in numismatic history as the first year of copper-nickel clad composition, replacing the 90% silver standard. The Coinage Act of 1965 also removed mintmarks from all coins dated 1965 through 1967, so this quarter bears no mint identification. The strong spread classification places DDO-003 among the more prominent doubled die varieties for the date, and the RDV-004 die pairing provides crucial attribution information — collectors can verify both sides for complete identification. The 1965 date produced multiple DDO varieties, each from a different working die, and the strong date spread makes DDO-003 one of the more accessible entries for cherry-pickers.
