Description
Swoger catalog number D1965-1a. Despite the D1965 catalog number, this silver medal commemorates the Nevada statehood centennial of 1864. Swoger catalog numbering occasionally reflects the year of striking rather than the anniversary year. Nevada achieved statehood on October 31, 1864, becoming the 36th state during the Civil War. The silver composition reflects the particular appropriateness of precious metal for a Nevada commemorative, given that the state's early wealth derived almost entirely from the massive silver deposits of the Comstock Lode discovered in 1859 near Virginia City. The Swoger catalog (D-series), compiled by Tom Swoger, documents modern U.S. Mint commemorative medals from 1956 onward. This silver issue served as a companion or follow-up to the D1964-1b silver Nevada Centennial medal.
